Despite the Pandemic, Colorado Roads Were Just as Deadly in 2020

Despite Colorado’s shelter-in-place orders and efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 by staying at home, there was no slowing down the rate of traffic deaths in 2020. Colorado car accident statistics show us that fewer cars on the road do not necessarily equate to fewer accidents.

Between the period of January 1 through June 30 in 2020, there were 259 traffic deaths. During the same period of 2019, there were 256 deaths. According to CPR News, traffic was down by approximately 17% but the fatality rate per vehicle mile traveled rose by 20%.

2020 Colorado Car Accident Statistics

A contributing factor to the number of traffic fatalities in Colorado is speed. With fewer cars on the roads, interstate, and highways, more drivers are tempted to speed through the empty lanes. Reckless driving and an increased disregard of traffic laws were significant factors in the high number of crashes and deaths in 2020.

The Colorado Department of Transportation examined fatal crashes from March 1 – May 28 and compared them from 2019 to 2020. With the reduced amount of traffic on the roads, officials expected to see significant decreases in fatalities. Their findings surprised them:

  • Bike fatalities: 0% change
  • Pedestrian fatalities: – 42% change
  • Motorcycle fatalities: 5% change
  • Under 19 fatalities: 30% change
  • Distracted driving fatalities: 150% change
  • Speed-related fatalities: 6% change

While this data from CDOT was based on preliminary data, it mirrored a trend. Other states have experienced similar increases in rates of fatal crashes despite a decrease in traffic. Overall, Colorado had 545 fatal crashes in 2019 and in 2020 there were 583 fatal crashes.

Safe Driving Tips for a Safer 2021

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death in Colorado and among car crash fatalities, 53% of people were not wearing a seatbelt. Speed was a factor in 35% of crashes.

As the spread of COVID-19 slows, we’re going to see more and more traffic on the roads. It’s as important as ever that all Colorado residents work together to prevent accidents by driving safely and cautiously.

Some safe driving tips include:

  • Eliminate distractions in the car by turning your cell phone on silent
  • Take inclement weather into consideration when driving
  • Obey all traffic laws, especially speed limits
  • Avoid following too closely
  • Ensure you get adequate rest before driving
  • Avoid driving through the night if you can help it
  • Buckle up
  • Call a ride if you’ve had too much to drink

These tips might seem basic but they could save a life.
